Things to do in Yogyakarta
Yogyakarta (“Jogja”) is Indonesia’s living cultural capital—home to royal heritage at the Kraton, world-renowned temple complexes like Prambanan and easy excursions to Borobudur, plus thriving batik workshops, galleries, and street-food scenes along Malioboro and Prawirotaman. It’s a compact, walkable city where arts, history, and contemporary creativity meet—perfect for pre/post-conference exploring.
Malioboro
Yogyakarta’s most iconic promenade, Malioboro is a lively corridor of batik shops, street-food stalls, and heritage landmarks connecting the railway station to the city’s historic core. Set on the north–south line that links Mount Merapi to the Kraton, it forms part of the recently inscribed UNESCO Cosmological Axis of Yogyakarta and its Historic Landmarks—perfect for an evening stroll after sessions.
Kraton & Alun-Alun
The Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat (Sultan’s Palace) anchors the city’s cultural life, flanked by the twin royal squares: Alun-Alun Lor (north) and Alun-Alun Kidul (south). Historically used for ceremonies and military drills, today the squares host community gatherings and the playful masangin tradition of walking between the banyan trees—an easy way to experience court heritage steps from the city center.
Prambanan
A breathtaking 9th-century Hindu temple compound dedicated to the Trimurti (Shiva, Vishnu, Brahma), Prambanan is Indonesia’s largest Shiva site and a UNESCO World Heritage property. Look for the narrative bas-reliefs of the Ramayana, and—time permitting—catch the open-air Ramayana Ballet performed against the illuminated temples.
Borobudur
One of the world’s greatest Buddhist monuments, Borobudur (8th–9th century) rises as a stone mandala of concentric terraces crowned by 72 perforated stupas. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it rewards an early start—sunrise reveals the Kedu Valley and the temple’s exquisite geometry in misty gold. Easy day-trip territory from Yogyakarta.
